Is it stick-to-your-ribs weather already? To heck with that flimsy salad, let’s eat schnitzel. Or chicken Parmesan. Or country fried steak. No matter the geography, world cuisine — and Atlanta — has a lot to offer when it comes to pan-fried cutlets.
Gimza Polish Restaurant
3435 Medlock Bridge Road, Norcross. 770-441-2268, www.gimzapolish restaurant.com
Got a schnitzel jones? Gimza will get you your fix. This Polish palace in Norcross has ground pork schnitzel in bread crumbs covered in sautéed onions and egg; chicken or pork cutlets breaded and battered; or croquettes made with Polish pancakes wrapped around ground pork with sautéed onions and mushrooms, smothered in a creamy mushroom sauce. There’s no excuse for not getting your schnitzel on.
The Colonnade
1879 Cheshire Bridge Road, N.E., Atlanta. 404-874-5642
Maybe country-fried steak isn’t truly traditional schnitzel, but dang if it doesn’t taste good. And dang if we just don’t care — pan-fried steak served with old-fashioned, peppery pan gravy offers up the South’s rendition at this institution of Southern grub and Red Hat Society gals.
Abattoir
1170 Howell Mill Road, inside the White Provision complex, Atlanta, 404-892-3335, www.starprovisions.com
Abattoir’s new fall menu is sporting one of the most savory entrees ever: chicken schnitzel — a huge breast of juicy fried chicken, cutlet-style, served in a big white bowl with shards of fennel and celery, plus bits of sweet pear in a juicy au jus. It’s plenty big enough to share, but you might not want to.
Shaun’s
1029 Edgewood Ave. N.E., Atlanta. 404-577-4358, www.shaunsrestaurant.com
Chef Shaun Doty’s pork schnitzel has been written about almost as much as Michelle Obama’s biceps, with one difference: I never tire of this dish — rings of sweet onions, peanuts and parsley scattered over tender, fried Berkshire pork cutlets in a Vienna-meets-Vietnam moment to savor.
Alfredo’s Italian Restaurant (not rated)
1989 Cheshire Bridge Road, Atlanta, 404-876-1380, www.alfredositalian restaurant.com
It doesn’t appear on this Atlanta landmark’s menu, but you can get it if you know to ask: chicken Parmesan made with tender, breaded cutlets swimming in rich tomato sauce and smothered in mozzarella. Mangia.
