Village Burger in Dunwoody is a fun, friendly take on the classic American roadside burger joint, with reasonable prices, plenty of parking and outdoor seating, plus beer and wine.
Since opening in late September in a freestanding building on Dunwoody Village Parkway, it’s quickly become a lunchtime favorite for area workers and a dinner and weekend go-to for families with children.
The look: Though owners and Dunwoody neighbors Matt Gephardt and Ricardo Gonzalo gutted the former Bruster’s space before tackling a complete renovation, the look is surprisingly funky, evoking iconic SoCal drive-ins and dives such as Pink’s Hot Dogs. You order at the counter, get a number and grab a seat.
The scene: VB’s motto is “By the people of Dunwoody, for the people of Dunwoody.” On a recent sunny afternoon, there were lots of locals relaxing around the patio and spilling into the parking lot. A cadre of countermen and food runners kept the orders moving to the strains of a string of Beatles songs punched-up on the jukebox.
The menu: True to its name, VB is about cooked-to-order burgers, with a choice of free toppings and sauces, served on a bakery bun. The signature Village burger ($5.29) with cheddar, Swiss or American is piled with two patties. The boardwalk-style fries are hand-cut and cooked in peanut oil. Other choices include char-broiled hot dogs and chicken, veggie or grilled cheese sandwiches.
The drinks: There’s beer by the bottle ($3-$4), pint ($3-$4) or pitcher, with Bud Light, Yuengling Lager, New Belgium Fat Tire and Sweetwater 420 on draft. A to Z Pinot Gris and Matchbook Cabernet Sauvignon are $6 by the glass or $22 by the bottle. Soft drinks ($1.79) include free refills.
The extras: Look for daily burger and weekly beer specials posted on a chalkboard menu near the order counter. Recently, it was a “Southern burger,” with bacon and pimiento cheese, and New Belgium 2 Degree Below winter ale. Besides burgers and fries, the big draw every day is soft serve frozen custard, served in cups or cones or made into shakes, sundaes or concretes.
