First Look: Delia’s Chicken Sausage Stand in East Atlanta

It seemed like a meeting of two cleverly conceptual minds when Molly Gunn of the Porter Beer Bar and her mentor, Delia Champion of the Flying Biscuit Café, teamed up to conceive Delia’s Chicken Sausage Stand.

Originally, the duo planned to run a food truck, Gunn said. But regulations sent them looking for a bricks-and-mortar space. They wound up in the former Fish Supreme Delight building along a fast-food row on Moreland Avenue, near I-20 and East Atlanta Village.

The look: Gunn said the design for Delia's aimed for "a truck without wheels." But in many ways, the stand resembles an iconic American hot dog or hamburger joint -- think Pink's in Los Angeles. DayGlo colors, pop art-style logos and menus, and picnic tables out front announce a simple, laid-back place with a bit of hip wit.

The scene: Delia's opens at 7 a.m. seven days a week and stays open until 4 a.m. on Fridays and Saturdays. So far, Gunn said, traffic builds as the day goes on, with crowds peaking evenings and during the the wee hours on weekends. But one recent weekday afternoon, a steady stream of customers lined up at the order counter and filled most seats outside.

The menu: Delia's signature is the Slinger, local sausage made with chicken sourced from Georgia's Springer Mountain Farms. Built on soft H & F Bread Co. rolls, the sandwiches ($3.99-$6.99) come with a variety of toppings and funky names, such as the Hot Mess, with chili, Wild Heaven beer cheese sauce and jalapenos. Breakfast anytime includes a sausage burrito with eggs, cheese and potatoes ($5.99).

The drinks: The drinks menu features fun takes on old-fashioned favorites. There's slushie-style frozen sweet tea ($1.99) or raspberry lemonade ($2.50), or mix the two to make "The Swirlie" ($2.50).

The extras: Gunn says she hopes to have sausage on the streets in a Delia's food truck by fall. In the meantime, they'll deliver their catering menu to your door, whether it's sandwiches for the office or a DIY Slinger bar for a party.
