Anthony Antoine dreams big.
HIV prevention counselor by day and an independent music artist by night, Antoine is determined to make one dream a reality. He recently posted a comical YouTube video in a campaign to be Oprah Winfrey’s final guest when her show ends in 2011.
Antoine’s previous video posts of singer Jennifer Hudson at The Fox Theatre and the Sprite Step-Off Competition held earlier this year at the Georgia Dome went viral.
“The idea came to me in a dream,” explains Antoine, 40. “When I found out she was ending her show after 25 years, I just really wanted to say thank you.”
It’s a musical spoof on notable people and moments in American culture with pokes at Sarah Palin, The Old Spice Guy and Janet Jackson’s infamous Super Bowl appearance. As the video closes Antoine wakes up to a nightmare -- an Elin Woods character yielding a golf club.
"I wanted to make a video where we laughed in the face of moments in the media, when we just seemed to be obsessed with celebrity happenings,” says Antoine, who lives in Midtown.
He has an actual guest from a past Oprah show in the video. Author J.L. King was on the show in 2004 to discuss his book, “On the Down Low: A Journey into the Lives of ‘Straight' Black Men Who Sleep With Men.”
“That was the only show that I was mad with Oprah about,” recalls Antoine, who is openly gay. The book title alone made for a controversial show. Antoine says the talk show queen fed into fears that “down low” men have a large impact on HIV numbers.
King, an Atlanta resident, says his life changed dramatically after “Oprah.” His book became a New York Times bestseller, and he has since become more frank about himself and the topic.
“That day I was still confused about who I was and I was trying to cover it up,” says King, adding that Antoine will have a blast if he makes it to the “Oprah” stage.
“Oprah is grabbing your hand; laughing and joking with you during the commercial time. I’m looking at her like I can’t believe I’m here. It’s like a dream,” King says.
“For me, it would be a dream come true,” adds Antoine.
