Celebrities open the stock exchanges

When the blue chips are down, you can count on celebrities to lend a hand. The latest: The cast of "The Expendables" -- from left, Dolph Lundgren, Jason Statham, Sylvester Stallone, and Terry Crews ring the opening bell.

HELLO KITTY: On Aug. 4, 2010. That Sanrio magic worked, pushing the Dow up 44 to 10680.

THE 'JERSEY SHORE' CAST: On July 27, 2010, MTV's lunkheads opened trading. At the end of the day, the Dow was at 10537, up 12 points.

ANNA KOURNIKOVA: The hardcourt cutie rang the New York Stock Exchange opening bell on Wednesday, March 25, 2009, and looked great doing it. So how did the market respond? The Dow Jones Industrial Average closed 89 points higher, at 7749. Not bad.

ASHANTI (center, left) and WENDY WILLIAMS: On June 3, 2008, the Dow fell 101 to 12402, despite the combined star power of the pop singer and the fiery radio hostess. And here we thought you ladies always took care of your business....

U.S. OLYMPIC TRACK & FIELD MEDAL WINNERS: Olympians Walter Dix, LaShawn Merritt, and Angelo Taylor rang in the market on Sept. 5, 2008. Trading was heavy, leaving the Dow up 32 points at 11220 at the end of the day.

MICHAEL PHELPS: Four days later, it was the swimmers' turn. Phelps joined Olympian teammates Natalie Coughlin and Brian Lochte to bang the gavel on Sept. 9, 2008. Unfortunately, Phelps' invincibility didn't translate, as the Dow fell 280 points to 11230.

GENE SIMMONS: The markets were not impressed with KISS frontman on Nov. 19, 2008. By the day's close, the Dow had fallen 427 points to 7997. Gene, this is what happens when you don't wear the makeup.

THE MAYOR OF WHO-VILLE: Here Gene, let a Dr. Seuss character show you how it's done. While promoting his latest film, the mayor of Who-ville opened the NYSE on Nov. 26, 2008. The result? Up 247 to close at 8726. Put that guy in charge of the Treasury.

DEE SNIDER: The Twisted Sister frontman showed up without makeup on Dec. 22, 2008 to hit the gavel. By day's end, the Dow had dropped 59 to close at 8519. See? It's all about the makeup!

HILARY DUFF: The sugarcoated singer rang in the trading on Dec. 23, 2008, but there was no sugar-coating the result: down 99 to close at 8419.

THAT 'AMERICAN CHOPPER' GUY: Paul Teutul Sr. brought the muscle on March 11 of this year, but his presence could only push the Dow up a measly three points that day, to close at 6930. Next time, more power!

BIGGIE'S MOM: Let's turn to the Nasdaq now. On Jan. 8, 2009, Voletta Wallace, the mother of the Notorious B.I.G. (with grandson CJ Wallace), rang in Nasdaq trading. That index closed up 17 points at 1617. Not big, but not bad.

QUEEN LATIFAH, KATIE HOLMES & DIANE KEATON: The stars of the movie "Mad Money" tried to wrestle that title away from CNBC's Jim Cramer by opening the Nasdaq on Jan. 16, 2009. They showed a modest knack for driving stock prices up, closing 17 points higher at 1529.

Take that, Jim Cramer!
