The top three features of the third annual Atlanta Arts Festival, happening this weekend at Piedmont Park? Easy: Art, art and art.
Buy art: The artist market is the centerpiece of the festival and runs from 10 a.m. to 7 p.m. Saturday and from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. Sunday. This year’s festival features some 200 painters, sculptors, woodworkers, photographers and jewelry makers. Every year one artist’s work is chosen for the official poster. This year’s artist Richard Jacobus, is a New Jersey native who came to his senses and moved south. He lives in Georgia now and his piece, “The Sun and the Moon,” was selected for the 2009 Arts Festival Poster.
Watch art being made: A mixed media and collage demonstration led by Vickie Martin and woodturning demonstrations by Simmons Woodturning are among the art-as-spectator-sport events going on this weekend. Artist demonstrations are curated by Denise Leitch Jackson of Emerging Art Scene.
Create art yourself: Unleash your inner artist by participating in The Peace Project, where festival patrons are invited to contribute to a community painting under the tutelage of Atlanta-based artists Julie Ross and Tommy Lee. The theme is “whirled peace.” (Heh heh, get it?) Or embrace the green scene at the RE-Art Center by creating art with repurposed materials collected by festival volunteers and Piedmont Park.
The festival, which is free, also features food and entertainment. On Saturday, Tyler Herrin performs at noon, followed by Steve Monce at 2:30 p.m. and Francisco Vidal at 5 p.m. The Sunday lineup is Sam Thacker at noon, Scotty Cram at 2:30 p.m. and Critty Upchurch at 4 p.m. Throughout the festival, look for bucket drummer Chris Harris, Andean group Mystic Warriors, chalk art by Kevin Roundtree and an appearance by the Seed and Feed Marching Abominable.
