What exactly is "Kinky Boots"?

You're probably not alone if you've seen the billboards with the sparkly thigh-high boots and the words "Kinky Boots" around Atlanta and online, but you're not quite sure what it's promoting.

"Kinky Boots" is a fun musical that has been on Broadway at the Al Hirschfeld Theatre for three years. The production will play at the Fox Theatre today (March 29) through Sunday (April 3).\

If you're looking to attend a fun critically-acclaimed production this week, this is a great option.

But, before you go, here are five things you should know about the production:

1."Kinky Boots" tells the story of Charlie Price, a man tasked with taking over his family's failing shoe business after hs father dies. He meets and befriends a drag queen named Lola and the two team up to work on an idea that could save the company.

2. The musical was based on the 2005 film of the same title. Both are based on true events.

3. Cyndi Lauper won a Tony for "Best Score" for her work on the music and lyrics for this production. The score was Lauper's first time writing for a stage production.

4. In total, the musical won six Tonys in 2013, including "Best Musical" and Lauper's "Best Score."

5.  Jerry Mitchell, the "Kinky Boots" director and choreographer who won a choreography Tony for the show, told AJC's Melissa Ruggieri that promoting a musical with the word "kinky" in th title can be a bit challenging. "The biggest challenge is that in America, 'kinky' means something different than in London," he said. Read more from their Q&A here.

Times vary. Through April 3. $30-$150. Fox Theatre, 660 Peachtree St. N.E., Atlanta. 1-855-285-8499,www.foxtheatre.org.
