Some Georgia school districts and colleges have announced they will not have classes on Wednesday as the snow has begun falling across the state.

Georgia College & State University was among the first schools to make a decision about its plans for Wednesday. The school said on its website that all “undergraduate classes, in-person events and after-school activities have been canceled. The basketball games planned for Wednesday will be rescheduled. Online graduate courses will continue as scheduled.”

State officials have warned the public to stay home and prepare for up to 48 hours of extreme cold that will bring snow to parts of Georgia that haven’t seen such a storm in nearly 40 years.

Several districts in the northernmost part of the state have said they’ll be closed. Whitfield County said on its website that it is concerned about “extreme cold affecting students at bus stops and the possibility of issues with HVAC systems and bus operations.”

Some school districts, such as Bartow County, Cobb County, Marietta and Rome, said they plan to operate on a two-hour delay Wednesday. Other districts, like City Schools of Decatur and Clayton County, are planning virtual learning on Wednesday. Emory University is advising students to contact their professors to learn if the classes will move online.

A few school districts, such as Carroll and Cherokee, are planning to be open Wednesday.

“Temperatures will be cold, but the sun should be out. We can’t wait to see everyone back at school!” Carroll County said on its website.

Kennesaw State University said it plans to resume normal operations Wednesday. The University of West Georgia’s Carrollton campus will resume full operations Wednesday while its Newnan campus will remain online.

Mercer University’s Atlanta campus and its Henry County and Douglas County Regional Academic Centers will be closed Wednesday. In-person classes on its Macon campus are canceled while operations there will be delayed until noon.
