Fulton County Schools’ four-year graduation rate increased to 87.7% for the class of 2021.
That’s up by 2.2 percentage points from the year before.
Chief Academic Officer Cliff Jones pointed to several potential factors that could have driven the success. He said the district made it a priority to decrease drop-out rates and offered more summer learning opportunities for students to catch up on needed credits.
High schools also gave students more time to complete assignments last year, he said.
“Despite all the trials and tribulations caused by the pandemic, our teachers worked with parents and community members to ensure our students were able to stay focused on their future and together they’ve achieved the highest graduation rate since the state has begun calculating this number,” Jones said, at a recent board meeting.
Graduation rates at most of the district’s 19 high schools improved, with Banneker and Tri-Cities high schools achieving the biggest gains. Banneker’s rate jumped by 5.4 percentage points, while Tri-Cities increased by 4.8 percentage points.
The statewide graduation rate for 2021 was 83.7%, according to the Georgia Department of Education, which released the data last week.
