School districts in metro Atlanta and across North Georgia are considering cancelations or digital learning later this week as the National Weather Service has issued a winter storm watch for the region Friday morning.
Polk County’s school system posted a message on its website Wednesday morning saying it will transition to a “learn-from-home day” on Friday. All extracurricular activities/sporting events for Friday and Saturday are postponed and will be rescheduled at a later date.
“We apologize for any inconvenience, but will always make decisions in the best interest of our students and staff, keeping safety our first priority,” officials said in the message.
Gordon County announced Wednesday afternoon it is closing its schools on Friday. “Students will bring home any missing assignments, including work for their reading logs, spelling, vocabulary, or other classwork, to complete if they have not already done so at school,” the district said.
Clayton County school officials posted a message asking parents and guardians to make sure children are dressed warmly for the predicted inclement weather. “District Facility Services teams should also take this weather outlook into consideration and prepare accordingly,” they said. Clayton urged parents and guardians to continue monitoring the website for updates.
Other school districts, such as Barrow, Forsyth and Gordon, said on their websites they are closely monitoring the forecast and will make decisions as necessary.
The University of Georgia and Georgia Tech said they will announce decisions Thursday about campus operations Friday. Hall County’s school district also said on social media it will make a decision Thursday about whether school will be open Friday. Towns County Schools said it will announce a decision about Friday by 6 p.m. Thursday.
The Cherokee County School District said it’s monitoring the forecast, but based on wind chill factor levels, officials have decided to relocate student outdoor activities indoors. Fulton County’s school system also said it is canceling extra curricular activities and sports on Friday.
