Fifth, eighth grade classes in quarantine at two Fulton County schools

Both classes will move to remote learning starting Tuesday. The Camp Creek students will return to in-person learning on Aug. 31. The Lake Windward students will return Sept. 3.

District officials will directly notify any individuals required to quarantine for longer.

“If circumstances dictate additional steps, we will notify the school community immediately,” the district said in its announcement.

The district said the quarantine periods were necessary “based on a high volume of positive cases and direct contacts.” The district developed a closing matrix to guide such decisions.

The district reported 12 cases of COVID-19 among students and staff at Camp Creek and 172 direct contacts from Aug. 13-19, the most recently available data.

Employees and students who have been in direct contact with a COVID-19-positive employee or student are considered direct contacts.

There were eight positive cases at Lake Windward and 91 direct contacts during that same period.

The school system requires everyone to wear a mask in all buildings, though officials have proposed opening a mask-optional campus to serve students in kindergarten through eighth grade.

Across metro Atlanta, 14 districts reported more than 6,300 COVID-19 cases in the past week.
