Private Quarters: Inman Park tour home showcases quirky mid-century style

About 2,573 square feet, 5 bedrooms, 41/2 baths in main house and guest apartment

The house, which has a mix of Victorian and American Foursquare architecture, is on the 2016 Inman Park Tour of Homes on April 30-May 1. Bill Goodman and Karen Goeckel bought their century-old Inman Park home in 2014. This is one of the few houses in Inman Park that has always been a single-family home, instead of being divided into apartments at some point, they say.

A porch wraps around three sides of the Inman Park home. The previous owners added onto the outdoor space in the early '70s after they bought and razed the house next door, said Bill Goodman and Karen Goeckel, who bought the home in 2014.

The butterfly is Inman Park's symbol, and is next to the front door that homeowners Bill Goodman and Karen Goeckel painted orange. The home is on the 2016 Inman Park Tour of Homes on April 30-May 1.

The stained glass and the transom were made for the previous owners, who restored the century-old home in Inman Park.

The second Bill Goodman and Karen Goeckel walked into the house, it felt like their home. Originally, they were outbid. But when that deal fell through, they had the opportunity to buy the home, which ended a three-year long search for a bigger house in Inman Park.

The previous owners stripped all of spindles and other woodwork by hand when they renovated the house. The homeowners say the stairs are emblematic of the labor required to turn around many of the old homes in Inman Park.

Mixing contemporary pieces, IKEA items and family hand-me-downs creates a casual residence for kids, dogs and spur-of-the-moment get-togethers with friends, the homeowners say.

After searching for two years, Bill Goodman and Karen Goeckel found the china cabinet and chairs, which fit with their appreciation of mid-century modern style.

When the couple bought their chandelier at Scott Antique Market, they were unable to inspect it in the box and discovered it was only 60 percent complete. They spent almost a year tracking down missing parts from junk shops and eBay, said homeowner Bill Goodman.

The striped hardwood floors were stained by the previous owner and are believed to be based on an old Colonial pattern. Current owners Bill Goodman and Karen Goeckel originally were going to redo them, but decided they liked the contrast and kept the design.

The walnut dining table from City Issue is the homeowners' favorite piece of furniture and started their love for mid-century modern design. They loved the look of the wood so much that they selected walnut for the cabinets when they renovated the kitchen of the Inman Park home.

The newly renovated kitchen is Bill Goodman and Karen Goeckel's favorite room, with extras such as a wine/soda chiller, microwave drawer and quartz island countertops with a waterfall edge. For their mid-century modern space, they worked with architect Adam Stillman, Ed Turner of Classic Renovators and design consultant Thea Quillian.

A built-in window seat provides a cozy nook off the kitchen, which has custom walnut cabinets.

The homeowners were inspired by a blue and white bowl from Crate & Barrel for their renovated kitchen's color palette. They selected white cabinets from IKEA, which was cheaper than their original plan for blue upper cabinets. They added blue by using tile backsplash from Specialty Tile in Buckhead's Miami Circle.

Bar stools from IKEA and a ring light fixture from Progressive Lighting bring sleek, yet simple, style to the renovated Inman Park kitchen. Trim Line Construction found the horizontal grain walnut they wanted for the custom bottom kitchen cabinets and to rebuild the window seat. The upper white cabinets are from IKEA.

The home has seven fireplaces, including this tiled one in the dining room. All of the fireplaces in the main house are original to the circa 1911 home, which is on the Inman Park Tour of Homes on April 30-May 1.

The letters displayed on the mantel are from science fiction writer and TV host Arthur C. Clark, and playwright, screenwriter and author Neil Simon. The framed bride of Frankenstein picture was a gift from a former boss when homeowner Bill Goodman worked at Turner Classic Movies. Text by Lori Johnston and Emily Jenkins/Fast Copy News Service.

On the mantel, a cast-iron bank from the turn of the century was purchased by Karen Goeckel's uncle, an avid antiques hunter, while in Asheville, N.C. The homeowners say they have picked up his habit of bringing back pieces from travels within and outside the U.S.

The previous owner stenciled and faux finished almost every surface in the house, which Bill Goodman and Karen Goeckel purchased in 2014.

The tarot cards are a Swiss deck that homeowner Bill Goodman's mother found when he was a kid. They sat in a box for years until he saw cards framed at a restaurant and decided to do the same in his home.

In the study, the chair is an Eames reproduction from ModwayFurniture.com. The black leather sofa is from IKEA and the nesting tables are from City Issue. For the drapes, the homeowners used fabric from IKEA and added the stripes.

One of the bedrooms was being converted into a master bathroom when Bill Goodman and Karen Goeckel bought the home in 2014. They decided to convert it back into a bedroom. "We saw what great light that room got, " Goeckel said.

The bathroom’s existing clawfoot tub was replaced with a freestanding oval tub, which was selected by design consultant Thea Quillian and Ed Turner of Classic Renovators. The Italian ceramic tile, which extends to the ceiling, and marble tile on the floor are from Specialty Tile on Buckhead’s Miami Circle. The chandelier was selected by the previous owners.

Look for original art that catches your eye at neighborhood festivals, which is where the homeowners met the artist who created this triptych.
