Private Quarters: Embracing past and future in Inman Park

Victorian meets vintage in this Atlanta home. Homeowners renovated the kitchen and throughout the home, they have blended vintage maps, mid-century pieces and artwork, including photos of iconic Atlanta spots, with new furniture and heirloom pieces that have received modern updates.

Kendall Stowell bought the bar/buffet cabinet from a showroom at AmericasMart Atlanta, but repainted it from green to black and changed the wood and the fixtures. She likes the wire screens on the cabinet doors. It's below Lana Mitchell's painting of Positano, Italy, where the couple honeymooned.

The mosaic tile fireplace in the dining room is original to the home, which was built in 1896. The walls are plaster, the mirror is from Go 2 Home and the candlesticks are from Accentrics Design.

The dining room table, which is from Pottery Barn, and the dining room chairs used to look different. Kendall Stowell repainted the table from an "awful" green-blue to a high gloss white and removed the fabric from the chairs before recovering and repainting them. The stainless steel light fixture is from a showroom at AmericasMart.

Kendall and Nick Stowell have spent $8,000 to renovate the kitchen of their Inman Park home, but kept the black and white ceramic tile floor. The countertops are Avenza marble and subway tile goes from the floor to the ceiling. The appliances are Maytag, except the refrigerator, which was bought from IKEA.

The arcing window that leads from the kitchen to a back deck is believed to be original to the Inman Park home, which was built in 1896. The Stowells purposely kept the kitchen simple so it would feature the black and white floor, which is ceramic tile.

Kendall Stowell posts old family photos, various other pictures and to-do lists to this magnetic wall, which she calls her "Inspiration Wall" near the kitchen of her Inman Park home. Stowell and her husband Nick are updating the home in stages.

The guest bedroom in Kendall and Nick Stowell's two-bedroom, two-bath home in Inman Park features a sewing form that Kendall has had for years and a mid-century bed that Nick brought into the marriage. The mirror is from Pottery Barn and the bedding is from Restoration Hardware.

One of the home's four original fireplaces - this one is brick -- is adorned by a framed map of Scotland, framed pictures from the homeowners' honeymoon in Positano, Italy, a mirror and an "S" from when the Stowells were first married. An apothecary table and globe add to the vintage feel of the room.

The master bedroom features an antique bed that Kendall and Nick Stowell refinished and reupholstered and bedding from Pottery Barn and Restoration Hardware. The framed mirrors and lamps are from Redefined Home.

The large mirror in the master bedroom matches other doors in Nick and Kendall Stowell's Inman Park home, even though this door was brought from northern Alabama. There are four original fireplaces in the two-bedroom, two-bath home, which was built in 1896.

A small, but bright painting by Bradley Gordon of Oxford, Miss., hangs above a chair in the master bedroom that is from Pottery Barn. Kendall Stowell loves the look of combining walls painted with Benjamin Moore's Chelsea Gray with white molding.

The Victorian feel of the Inman Park home is carried into the master bathroom, which features two stained glass windows and a claw-foot tub that's original. The metal light fixture, which is from a salvage yard in Alabama, adds a rustic element to the decor.

Homeowner Kendall Stowell gave her grandmother's record holder a new look with orange paint and surrounded it with two mid-century chairs. Local photographer Rob Simmons shot the photos on the wall of iconic Atlanta landmarks, such as the Clermont Lounge and the Krog Street bridge.

A lamp, which Nick bought for Kendall as a birthday present from West Elm, and real cherry tree limbs from Floral Park Market decorate a white chest that held her grandparents' record player. The display and the round gold mirrors - which are from Scott's Antique Markets -- are in the entryway leading from the front door.

A roomy entryway welcomes visitors to Kendall and Nick Stowell's Victorian home, which was built in 1896. It's wide enough to accommodate two pieces that belonged to her grandparents and mid-century chairs. The black-and-white floor is made from a different material than the black-and-white ceramic tile in the kitchen, and the white light fixture is from West Elm.

The Stowells turned this well-lit nook into a sitting area that includes a star light that already was installed when they bought the Inman Park home in 2011. The couch, which is from IKEA, pulls out into a bed for when they have extra guests, and Kendall has owned the woven table since she was in college.
