Grant Park mansion gets restored

The L.P. Grant Mansion undergoes restoration by the Atlanta Preservation Center.

The building known as the L.P. Grant Mansion sits on St. Paul Avenue in Grant Park. Originally built in 1857, it is being restored by the Atlanta Preservation Center.

An old photo of the Grant Mansion shows it in its original 3-story condition. The mansion was originally home to an Atlanta philanthropist, L.P. Grant. It was also the birthplace of Bobby Jones.

Still open to the elements, this room in the Grant Mansion is undergoing restoration. The mansion has suffered through years of neglect, decay, weather and abuse.

The mansion's kitchen space is in a further state of restoration completion.

Jeff Fagan (bottom) and Robert Hilbert (behind glass) hang a sash at the front of the Grant Mansion. Fagan is the vice president of Brunning and Stang, the company working on the restoration.

Rescued pieces crowd the rear of the mansion's property. The pieces are stored here until needed. According to Jeff Fagan, a lot of original pieces and artifacts will be incorporated into the final product.

This mantelpiece was excavated from the mansion's yard. Some relics found on the site are from past attempts to renovate, but some, such as this mantelpiece, have been identified as original to the building.

This exterior wall gives an idea of what much of the mansion looked like before restoration began.

A pair of stands grace one of the mansion's rooms. Jeff Fagan estimates that there are about 200 house artifacts such as window sashes and surrounds, pediments and hardware that need to be identified and labeled.

Fagan has been on the site for the past 18 months, trying to restore the once-grand mansion's rooms.

Fagan holds an original handcarved cornice. It will be used as a model for new handcarved versions used in the renovation of Grant Mansion.

Old masonry peeks out from part of a wall. The restoration has given a rare look into the way houses were built before the Civil War.

A rendering of the Grant Mansion hangs inside the Grant Park structure. During the upcoming Grant Park Tour of Homes, Sept. 27 and 28, the public is invited to drop by the mansion and see the status of the work.
