A Midtown building designed by famed architect I.M. Pei for Gulf Oil more than 60 years ago reopened in December as a 280-unit apartment complex, 131 Ponce. According to Pei’s New York-based architectural firm, Pei Cobb Freed & Partners, the Gulf Oil Building was the second design completed by the young architect in 1949, following the Helix building in New York City. The Gulf Oil Building is one of two designed by Pei in Atlanta today. The other one is the Wildwood Office Park completed in 1991. Pei designed a total of five existing projects in Georgia. The other three are in Augusta: The Augusta / Richmond County Civic Center (1980); the Broad Street Mall (1977) and the Chamber of Commerce of Greater Augusta building (1977). The new apartments at 131 Ponce, a project built by the Georgia division of Balfour Beatty Construction, feature four floorplans: studio, one, two, and four bedroom options.
