Atlanta’s fourth-largest law firm, Kilpatrick Stockton, is merging with a California firm in a deal that will significantly expand its size and reach..
Kilpatrick Stopckton said Wednesday it is joining forces with San Francisco-based Townsend and Townsend and Crew, effective Jan. 1. The combined firm will be called Kilpatrick Townsend & Stockton LLP and will have more than 650 attorneys.
Bill Dorris, co-managing partner of Kilpatrick Stockton, said in a statement that the deal "combines the experience of some of the nation’s preeminent attorneys representing a who’s who of corporate clients across an extensive range of industries.”
Dorris will be chairman of the new firm, Kilpatrick Townsend said. Diane Prucino, of Kilpatrick Stockton, and Maureen Sheehy, of Townsend, will be co-managing partners, according to a news release.
The union will bring together Kilpatrick Stockton's 460 attorneys with close to 200 at Townsend, creating a law firm with 17 offices across the United States and in Asia and Europe.
The combined offices would rank among the nation’s 70 largest law firms in number of attorneys and revenue, according to data from the 2009 National Law Journal 250 and 2010 American Lawyer's AmLaw 100. Kilpatrick Townsend will also have one of the largest intellectual property practices in the world, the news release said.
“This merger makes us a truly national and international law firm,” Dorris said in a phone interview Wednesday. “We will have a footprint to match the scope and breadth of our practices.”
This announcement comes a month after Kilpatrick Stockton announced its merger with Oakland, Calif.-based construction law firm Bell, Rosenberg & Hughes, the release said.
