Getting a lot for your property tax?

You don’t hear people brag too often about how much they are getting in exchange for their property taxes. Actually, it sometimes seems that folks think there’s pretty much no connection at all between what they pay and what they get.

Maybe there is, maybe not.

But if there is a link, there should be a way to measure it, yes?

At least, that's the contention of Smart Assets, a financial technology company that offers information and analysis about things like retirement, credit cards and home-buying.

The New York-based company has done a calculation of every county – that's every county! – using a small, but significant set of metrics: the county's property tax rate, school performance and crimes rates. Put 'em all together in a mathematical blender and this is whatcha get, Smart Assets says:

Smart Assets has ranked every county in Georgia. The best bang for your property tax buck in Georgia is Wilkes County.

In metro Atlanta, the best ranking is Gwinnett, 81st in the state.

*Company rated schools from 1 to 10, based on performance of students on standardized testing.
