The Home Depot, based in Atlanta, is Georgia's biggest company by revenue and expects to exceed $100 billion in annual sales by 2018. It has grown from two Atlanta stores in 1979 to more than 2,200 stores in three countries.

"A big focus is on new technology that specifically relates to our online business," Schelling said, so if you're looking for a job related to this side of the company, you're likely to find plenty of openings.

"I think an overall quality would be someone who's a game changer – someone who's inquisitive and wants to learn," Schelling said. The company looks for people who want to bring innovation and teamwork to the table, he added.

What's the hiring process like?

Search The Home Depot's career website for job openings by title and location. Afterward, a recruiter may contact you to gather more specific information. If you're interviewed, you may meet with one, two or more people from the hiring team.

Schelling said job candidates are viewed as the best possible consumers, and those applying for jobs at the store support center are given a gift card and tour. Interviewers will talk to them about their career development and possible growth within the company.
