The Public Service Commission has extended the contract for SCANA energy to continue providing natural gas at lower rates to customers in the Atlanta Gas Light distribution area.
Under the two year extended contract which starts in September and ends in August 2020, Scana will also provide the service to credit challenged customers struggling to keep up with their natural gas bills.
“The regulated provider enables thousands of low-income Georgians to enjoy natural gas service at reasonable prices or to obtain services they otherwise could not obtain,” said Commission Chairman Lauren “Bubba” McDonald.
A spokeperson for Scana said the company serves approximately 50,000 customers throughout the state.
Under the program, low-income customers receive discounted rates that are the lowest in the natural gas market.
Low income residential customers apply to the Department of Human Services to qualify for the service.
Scana has been the state’s regulated provider since 2002.
Scana is the states only regulated provider of natural gas to lower income and credit-challenged customers.
The service is provided statewide, but in areas only served by Atlanta Gas Light Company.
The new contract for Scana starts on September 1, 2018 and ends August 31, 2020.
