'Disco Kroger' goes upscale

The Buckhead party scene is but a whisper of its former loud self, but the disco Kroger is still there, albeit in a new, upscale form. Bill Harris shows off an expensive bottle of wine that will be among the more than 4,400 bottles for sale.

Chef Howard Warren gets ready for Sunday's grand opening of the disco Kroger, which will now be called Fresh Fare. Warren is creating menus for the hot bar, including his favorite, garden tilapia. He has more than a dozen sous chefs and line cooks working for him.

The store has a new focus in addition to its new look. It's going head to head against some of Buckhead's upscale grocers including Whole Foods and Fresh Market. So if you need an exotic fruit like Buddha's hand citron, shown here, you'll find it.

In a nod to its colorful history, the new store will keep the disco ball.

Ever wonder why they call it the "disco" Kroger? In the 1980s, the store, which originally opened in 1976, shared the Peachtree-Piedmont Crossing shopping center with a disco called the Limelight. The updated store, now called Fresh Fare, hasn't forgotten its past.
