Delta Air Lines is again bringing the iconic Boeing 747 back to Atlanta.

Atlanta-based Delta will use the jumbo jet on its Atlanta to Honolulu route this summer from May through early September. The route is normally flown with an Airbus A330. Delta previously used the 747 on the Atlanta-Honolulu route for a period in 2009.

The jumbo jet was pulled from Atlanta last fall as Delta retired four of its 16 Boeing 747s. Delta inherited the jets through its 2009 merger with Northwest Airlines, and now plans to retire four a year until all of the remaining 747s are gone from its fleet by the end of 2017.

But Delta decided to keep one of the four 747s retired last year as an operational spare for charters or use when other jets have maintenance or weather issues, offering more flexibility and contributing to the decision to put the 747 back on the Atlanta-Honolulu route.
