A former Sam's Club between Lindbergh Drive and Piedmont Road will become a church.

Passion City Church will be renovating the former big box, at 515 Garson Drive in Atlanta, that was later home to a Home Depot Expo and PGA Tour Superstore. Robert Day, a member of the church and real estate representative for Passion City, said about 3,000 people currently attend services in rotating spaces.

The church is doing its own improvements, Day said, and he does not expect services to be held there until after the first of the year. The renovations are being done in two stages; the first will include a large auditorium and children's areas.

The building is about 134,000 square feet and the first phase of construction will include about 60 percent of that space.

Day said the opportunity to reuse a building, and not build one from scratch, was part of the property's appeal. The congregation currently rotates its services between Greater Atlanta Christian Schools, The Tabernacle and Cobb Energy Performing Arts Centre.
