James Brown Contracting, a Lithonia-based short-haul truckload carrier, has acquired its second company in the past four months.

Navigation Capital Partners, an Atlanta private equity firm that owns Brown Trucking, purchased West Brothers’ Cos. in Durham, N.C. The add-on brings warehousing, brokerage, and contract leasing and maintenance businesses to Brown Trucking's portfolio.

In August, Navigation bought Schrader Trucking Co. in Jefferson City, Tenn. That purchase added a second mega-terminal in Tennessee for Brown and allowed the company to expand into trucking lanes it did not previously travel.

With the acquisitions, Brown has 810 trucks and 3,500 trailers.

Brian Kinsey, Brown Trucking's chief executive, said in a statement that the acquisition will provide more cross-selling opportunities for the company. The purchase included four companies: trucking company West Brothers’ Transportation Services; subsidiary West Brothers’ Transportation Solutions, which provides global freight brokerage services; Logistics Leasing, a truck leasing and maintenance company; and West Logistics, which provides contract warehousing and distribution services.

Owners Craig West and Tommy West will not remain with the business.

Brown's customers include industries that deal with paper and packaging, major appliances, consumer packaged goods and building materials.
