The City of Atlanta plans to award an airport currency exchange contract to a company that successfully challenged the initial decision to give the contract to another firm.
The city acknowledged in January that the winning firm it selected last year, International Currency Exchange, had a subcontractor that did not meet the requirements for experience. The subcontractor, Paracom, also lacked a certificate to operate in Georgia at the time it was selected.
The city's reversal of its decision came in response to a protest filed by Travelex, which lost out on the contract last year.
Hartsfield-Jackson International Airport officials and others preparing for the May 16 opening of the airport's international terminal had been waiting to learn whether the city would rebid the contract or award it to another firm. The city now says its procurement and aviation departments will recommend to the city council and Mayor Kasim Reed that the contract be awarded to Travelex.
Travelex president Jon Dario said he planned to work with the city on how to set up a temporary currency exchange operation, with the goal of being up and running on the new Concourse F when the international terminal opens next month.
