A small translator signal on FM 101.1 recently switched from Hispanic music to smooth jazz.
Greg Davis, owner of the station, said he is trying to fill what he sees as a void in the marketplace. The 101.1 signal can mostly be heard inside the perimeter on the south side and up I-85 though he said he's trying to find some ways to boost it. He also does not have a live stream available yet, noting that the station is in a "soft opening" mode.
Smooth jazz is not a terribly popular format anymore on commercial radio though in Atlanta, noncommercial jazz station 91.9/WCLK-FM does have fans. WCLK, owned by Clark-Atlanta University, ranked 26th in the latest Arbitron monthly ratings book with a 0.9 rating. Its ratings improved after it focused more on smooth jazz over traditional jazz in 2013. Wendy Williams, who runs 91.9, said in an interview today that she was not aware of the 101.1 format change but would check it out.
Davis owns six radio stations in Columbus and three other ones in Atlanta: La Raza 102.3 and 100.1 and Mega 96.5, both playing Hispanic music.
Here's the rough approximation of the 101.1 signal from radio-locator. I can't vouch for how truly accurate it is. I was downtown earlier today and the signal had some interference but it was clear up I-85 near Shallowford Road. Davis said the 250-watt signal emanates from a tower off Briarcliff Road.
