Anthony Williams left in last week's "Project Runway" episode with grace and a smile on his face. Was he covering up the pain inside after finishing seventh?
No. “I couldn’t mask how I was feeling,” he said. “That’s how I felt.”
“If I had left the show with my car repossessed and no place to live, then maybe I would have had a breakdown,” he said. “But I’m good. I’m very happy. Part of me was relieved. I’m the person who started in the bottom three and I ended up in the top seven. I have a lot to be proud of.”
He enjoyed the attention, how his quips and commentary became a centerpiece of the show each week.
Indeed, the show, which returns tonight sans Anthony, won’t be nearly as amusing. I asked him his take on the six remaining contestants:
Emilio: He’s an awesome designer. Television has edited him to make him look like the Kanye West of fashion. He’s mean to the little white girls. He’s really a kind person.
Mila: She’s an interesting designer. They’ve been buying everything she’s been selling. She has a bad attitude and a horrible personality. For you to get on a national television show with 16 people who tried out and for you to look around and say you don’t see anyone who is competent, I think you have to have balls as big as China!
Maya: I think she’s amazing. I’m glad I had an opportunity to work with her. I think she’s just so talented. She’s very innovative and very creative.
Jonathan: I love his passion and level of education about his craft. He has some real talent and a great future ahead of him.
Seth Aaron: He’s very talented but it’s like watching Jeffrey [Sebelia, winner of "Project Runway" season three]. I don’t think he were to win, America would be amazed or would even care.
Jay: Jay does amazing work. He’s an individual. He has just as good a shot as anybody else [to win.]
He thinks the judges like Emilio the most at this point.
Why his relationship with Jay worked so well: “We were very opposite. I’m very southern. My manners were different. I don’t try to change him. He doesn’t try to change me. But we did respond to the same things. We like things that look expensive. He works for the Gap. I used to work for the Gap. We have a lot of things in common. We just look at it differently.”
His favorite judge: Nina Garcia of Marie Claire. He got to meet her last Friday at Marie Claire’s offices in New York City. “She likes me as much as I like her,” he said.
He said he’s gotten numerous calls to host parties and such around the country and he plans to take advantage of that.
