At the outset of this morning's final House session of the 2016 gathering of the General Assembly, state Rep. Rusty Kidd, I-Milledgeville, tried to lighten the mood with a Donald Trump and a faux campaign speech.
It did not go over altogether well. State Rep. Earl Ehrhart, R-Powder Springs, criticized the attempt at comedy.
But in fact, the occasional sophomoric hijink is one of the many traditions of the Legislature. Twenty-four years ago, Kidd's father -- Culver Kidd, also of Milledgeville -- was a state senator.
The elder Kidd went to the well to speak for a measure praising Mothers Against Drunk Driving. He wore a suit made from 160 cloth bags in which bottles of Crown Royal whisky were sold.
He'd had a tailor stitch the suit together. Afterwards, Culver Kidd said he was going for irony.
