R.E.M.’s ‘Monster’ will be re-released in deluxe form for 25th anniversary

R.E.M.’s 1994 album will get the “Monster” treatment for a 25th anniversary reissue.

The release that spawned “What’s the Frequency, Kenneth?” and followed the massive success of albums “Out of Time” and “Automatic for the People” will be available in various physical formats – and digitally – on Nov. 1.

A five-CD, one-Blu-ray deluxe box set will include the original album, a 2019 remix from “Monster” producer Scott Litt, a CD of previously unreleased demos from the album and a live performance from 1995 in Chicago. The Blu-ray will offer the 90-minute film, “Road Movie,” which documents the 1995 tour from the Athens band and six music videos from “Monster.” The collection includes a portfolio book with new liner notes and archival photos.

The re-release will also be available as a double LP and double CD – with reimagined cover art by R.E.M. designer Chris Billheimer - and a standalone LP with Billheimer’s original art.

Digital editions of the album will mirror the physical versions. A remix of "What's the Frequency, Kenneth?" is available to stream or download now. 

“Monster” signaled a change in artistic direction for R.E.M., and marked another success. The album debuted at No. 1 on the Billboard 200 album chart and sold more than 4 million copies.
