Here are some games of note for Class AA in Week 10.
Callaway Cavaliers at Heard County Braves
When, where: 7:30 p.m. Friday, Staples Stadium, Franklin
Records, rankings: Callaway is 7-1, 4-0 in 5-AA and No. 2; Heard County is 5-2, 3-0 and unranked.
Last meeting: Heard County won 38-28 in 2017.
Watch the game: Online at NFHS Network.
Maxwell's projection: Callaway by 18
Notes: When the Braves won last year, it broke Callaway's four-game win streak in the series. But that Braves team featured Emory Jones, one of the country's top dual-threat quarterbacks. He's at Florida now, and the best playmaker on the field this year will be Cavs running back Tank Bigsby, who is one of the country's most coveted prospects. For that reason, the series is expected to swing back in Callaway's favor. The winner of this year's game will be in the driver's seat for the 5-AA title, as both teams are the only remaining unbeatens in league play. The Braves have rebounded from a 1-2 start — including a two-game skid that knocked them from their No. 3 spot in rankings — to win four straight. Both losses were to ranked teams, including top-ranked Hapeville Charter (33-3) and No. 3 Rockmart (33-0). They'll have a better idea than most teams of where they stand heading into the AA playoffs, as they will have already played the Nos. 1-3 ranked teams after Friday. The Cavs' only loss was 37-20 to to AAAA's No. 3 Troup.
Vidalia Indians at Swainsboro Tigers
When, where: 7:30 p.m. Friday, Buck Carvey Field, Vidalia
Records, rankings: Vidalia is 7-0, 3-0 in 2-AA and No. 7; Swainsboro is 5-2, 3-0.
Last meeting: Vidalia won 14-0 in 2017.
Maxwell's projection: Vidalia by 5
Notes: In all likelihood, this game will serve as the 2-AA championship. These teams are the only ones unbeaten in region play, and Vidalia has already beaten the only one-loss team, Toombs County (3-1), which is also the only other team with a winning region record. Should the Tigers win, they'll still need to beat Toombs County in their season finale to win the 2-AA. For the Indians, it would be their first region title since 2014, which was the last season they started 7-0. The Tigers are seeking their first region title since 2010, their last winning season. It would not be a surprise for the Tigers to win despite having not been ranked at any point this season. Their two losses were competitive and to ranked teams in No. 9 Dublin (20-13) and No. 6 Washington County (47-45), and they beat then-No. 8 Jefferson County 14-12 in their season opener. They've yet to allow a point in league play, outscoring Metter, Bacon County and Bryan County 96-0 in their last three games. Second-year coach Scott Roberts has turned the Tigers program around, along with quarterback Kade Youmans, who has completed 98 of his 187 passes for 1,604 yards and 22 touchdowns to just three interceptions.
Thomasville Bulldogs at Berrien Rebels
When, where: 7:30 p.m. Friday, Raymond Jones Memorial Stadium, Nashville (Ga.)
Records: Thomasville is 4-4, 0-2 in 1-AA; Berrien is 5-2, 0-1.
Last meeting: Thomasville won 42-14 in 2017.
Maxwell's projection: Thomasville by 12
Notes: Though not expected to be — at least not to this degree — it's been a rebuilding year for the Bulldogs. They started 10-0 last season to finish 12-1 and this season they were ranked No. 3 as recently as Sept. 28. But with heavy turnover from last year's squad, they find themselves on a three-game losing streak and without a win in region play. What earlier this season would have been viewed as a likely win against Berrien now seems as though it will be competitive. Though a win would certainly help, a loss likely won't exclude the Bulldogs from the playoffs given they play in a five-team Region 1-AA, with all but one team qualifying for the postseason. The odd team out will likely be Early County, though the Bobcats are 5-2 and will play at Thomasville in the season finale. Despite the down year, the Bulldogs have one of the country's top freshman quarterback prospects in Chad Moscoe, who holds offers from Florida, Florida State and South Carolina. The Rebels, on the other hand, are coming off a 50-20 loss to Fitzgerald in their region opener, which snapped a five-game win streak. They're led by junior running back Ken Bennett, who has 635 rushing yards and seven touchdowns.
