The ninth-ranked boys basketball team in Class AAA appears to be out of the state playoff.

Monroe of Albany reported this week to the GHSA the season-long use of an academically ineligible player and now expects to forfeit its 16 victories.

Because Region 1-AAA does not have a region tournament next week as do most GHSA regions, there is no opportunity for Monroe to recoup those losses. The Tornadoes’ season is over.

Without the forfeits, Monroe would be leading the four-team region with a 8-0 record and would’ve been a No. 1 seed in the state tournament, which begins Feb. 15. Monroe had made the state playoffs each of the past three seasons and made the quarterfinals in 2017.

According to the Albany Herald, which first reported the news, Monroe discovered the violation during a periodic review of grades posted in January. It was found that a player did not have enough credits to be eligible.

‘’We do have some very disappointed players right now,’’ Monroe coach Keith Hayes told the Herald. ‘’They have worked so hard to be ready for the playoffs. They are heartbroken.”
