Andy Mao can begin his golf career next fall at Georgia Tech as a rare four-time state champion The senior was medalist and helped Johns Creek win its fourth straight title on Tuesday at Woodmont Golf and Country Club in Canton.
Mao shot 64 on Monday and followed with a 68 on Tuesday, leaving him 12-under for the tournament. Mao won by nine shots over teammate Bruce Murphy, whose 69-72 would have been good enough to win state on many occasions.
Johns Creek also counted a 76-67 by Devin Patel, who tied for third, and a 75-69 from Jake Calamaro, who tied for seventh with teammate Preston Topper, a Georgia signee who had a 73-71. The Gladiators finished 20-under as a team and won by 26 over Creekview.
Creekview’s top scorers were Josh Ledford, who tied for third at 1-under, Jack Vajda, who was ninth at 1-over, and Tyler Latimer, who tied for 10th at 3-over.
The Johns Creek girls made it a clean sweep. The Gladiators ran away with the tournament at the Cobblestone Golf Course in Acworth, shooting a 2-over 434 and beating runner-up Northview, the defending state champions, by 37 shots. The Gladiators had all three girls finish in the top five: medalist Gen Wu at 3-under 141, runner-up Kate Song at 2-under 142 and Amy Ng in fifth at 7-over 151. Erica Scott of Northview and Kimberly Shen of Chattahoochee tied for third at 4-over 148.
Class AAAAAAA boys at Hamilton Mill Golf Club, Hoschton: West Forsyth won its first state golf title by posting a 609 and beating Walton (619) and defending champion North Gwinnett (620). West Forsyth's Jason Quinlan shot rounds of 73-72 and finished second overall. West Forsyth also got a 147 from Peyton Balent, who tied for third, a 155 from Jackson Hilton, an 82 from Ryan Pollman and an 80 from Ryan Grizzard. The medalist was Walton's Matthew Feste at even-par 144.
Class AAAAAAA girls at Chimney Oaks Golf Club, Statham: Lambert's Averi Cline and Rachel Burrell finished one-two and helped the Longhorns claim the title. Cline was medalist at 3-over 147, besting her teammate by one shot. It is the sixth title in seven years for Lambert.
Tess Davenport of Mill Creek was third at 150. Lambert shot a 452 to win by 17 shots over Mill Creek. Defending champion North Gwinnett placed third. Lambert has won five of the last six state championships.
Class AAAAA boys at Sunset Hills Country Club, Carrollton: Jarod Edwards shot a 7-under 135 to win the tournament and help Ola take its first state championship. Ola finished with a 7-over 575 and defeated defending champion Starr's Mill by 12. Cole New of Carrollton and George Langham of Starr's Mill tied for second at 141.
Class AAAAA girls at Sunset Hills Country Club, Carrollton: Starr's Mill made it three straight championships. The Panthers were led by runner-up Liza Eubanks (75-78) and Julie Schafhauser (84-76). Veterans finished second behind medalist Mailey Buzzell, who shot 74-76.
AAAA boys at Columbus Country Club: Carter Loflin finished at 3-under and placed second to help St. Pius win the school's first championship. Loflin shots rounds of 65-74 and the Golden Lions got contributions from Jack McDonald (71), Stephen Kinsel (73-71) and Shaun Cook (73). North Oconee was eight shots back, led by Marcus Reynolds, who was fourth. Three-time defending champion Columbus finished third behind medalist Jonathan Parker's 4-under 138.
Class AAAA girls at Maple Ridge Golf Club, Columbus: The Woodward Academy girls defended their state championship and won for the third time in four seasons. The War Eagles shot a 24-over 456 and beat Columbus by four shots, White County by 10 and Blessed Trinity by 11. Ayanna Habeel was Woodward's lower scorer at 7-over, leaving her tied for fifth. Madeleine Krueger of Columbus shot 147 to snag first place, one stroke better than Catie Craig of White County and Loralie Cowart of Central Carroll.
Class AAA boys at Cateechee Golf Club, Hartwell: Westminster claimed four of the top six places and blew away the field. Medalist William Love finished first at 9-under 135, which included rounds of 68 and 67. Sam Lape was second at 5-under, Harris Barth tied for fourth at 3-over and Walker McPhail tied for sixth at 4-over. Rival Lovett finished second ad Pierce County was third.
Class AAA girls at Arrowhead Pointe, Hartwell: Pierce County fought off North Hall to win by three shots. Tori Owens of Murray County, who has signed with Kennesaw State, was medalist with a 145. Mikayla Dubnik of North Hall and Pierce County's Sloan Lanier tied for second.
Class AA boys at Oak Mountain Golf Club, Carrollton: Ian Glanton shot a 3-under 141 to help Metter defend its state championship. Cade Curl and Will Altman tied for sixth and Lawson Salter was ninth for the Tigers. Elbert County finished second in the team competition behind Nathan Thornton, who tied for second at 146 with Tyler Lipscomb of Bremen.
Class AA girls at Oak Mountain Golf Club, Carrollton: Bremen ran away with the title, its 14-over total good for a 31-shot victory over Bleckley County. Bremen girl took the top three spots in the field: medalist Averi Schrews shot 6-over, runner-up Christian Williams was 10-over and Gittle Scolis was third at 11-over, tied with Emman Saunders of St. Vincent's Academy
Class A Public boys at Southern Landings Golf Club, Warner Robins: Drew Charter won its first state championship behind the tandem of Anthony Ford (78-71, third place) and Solomon Dobbs (79-77). Drew scored a 16-shot win over two-time defending state championship Gordon Lee. Thad Clark of Schley County had rounds of 71-72 to earn medalist honors, three shots better than Tucker Windham of Gordon Lee. Clark and Windham shared first place a year ago.
Class A Public girls at Southern Hills Golf Club, Hawkinsville: Lake Oconee Academy successfully defending its title behind medalist Katie Scheck, who shot a 1-under 143. Sister Kelli Scheck finished fourth. Gordon Lee placed second, as MaCall Miller was runner-up overall. Cameron Ford of Commerce placed third and helped the Tigers finish third.
Class A Private boys at Green Island Country Club, Columbus:
Christian Heritage won the state championship, as Jack Stafford shot 71-71 142. Mason Cady added a 145 and Hardin Chambless shot 147 to finish 17-over. That was good for a two-shot win over Brookstone and Holy Innocents’. Lindsey Cordell of Darlington was medalist at 3-under 139. Bo Blanchard of Brookstone and Cannon Crane of Lee County tied for second at 2-under.
Class A Private girls at Green Island Country Club, Columbus: Darlington defended its championship, beating Athens Academy by five shots. Meredith Bennett of Athens Academy was medalist at 3-over 149, two shots ahead of Atlanta International's Meghna Grover. Darlington's Liza Frisbee and Nea Leppanen finished third and fourth overall.
