GHSA associate director Tommy Whittle is stepping back to a part-time role with the association and turning over his most high-profile duty, that of coordinating football, to fellow associate director Kevin Giddens, the former Colquitt County athletics director.

Whittle is a former vice president of the Georgia Independent School Association who joined the GHSA staff in 2013. He won over 600 games as a basketball coach in south Georgia before taking on more administrative roles.

‘’After only 45 years involved in teaching, coaching, administration, being an AD, being a Region Secretary, and working in the State Office, I have decided to step back, some,’’ Whittle wrote in an email. “Dr. [Robin] Hines [GHSA executive director] has graciously agreed to allow me to continue doing One Act Play, Literary and Lacrosse for GHSA. I am stepping back as the lead person running Football for GHSA. Kevin Giddens will be the face of Football in GHSA, and will do a fantastic job.’’

Giddens joined the GHSA staff in May. His responsibilities were cross country and soccer, and he assisted with football, literary and one-act play.

Giddens was an assistant football coach on Colquitt County’s 1994 state-championship team and was athletics director during the 2014 and 2015 championship seasons. He served for several years as a GHSA region secretary and executive-committee member.

The GHSA indicated that there are no plans to hire a new staff member during this academic year.
