The No. 7 Brooks County Trojans have proven themselves worthy of state title contenders, even though they lost.

The Trojans gave AAAAA's top-ranked, defending state champion Bainbridge Bearcats all they could handle, ultimately coming up short, 27-26, on the road. It was a crushing defeat as, according to The Post Search Light's Powell Cobb, the Trojans scored with 1:28 remaining and were going for the win via a two-point conversion attempt. However, they were called for illegal procedure on the play and instead lined up for an extra point, which missed the mark and brought the score to its final margin.

The Trojans are now 1-2 on the season and it’s unclear how the loss will affect their position in the rankings. Nonetheless, it’s clear the Trojans can compete with the best of the best.

Here’s how the rest of the top 10 faired:

  • The No. 1-ranked Rockmart Yellow Jackets avenged their loss to the Heard County Braves in last year's AA title game by crushing them, 47-14. They are 3-0, while the Braves are 0-3. Kevin Myrick has the story for the Rome News-Tribune.
  • The No. 3 Callaway Cavaliers topped AAAAA's unranked Cross Keys, 69-0, to improve to 2-1. Kevin Eckleberry has the details for The LaGrange Daily News.
  • The No. 5 Rabun County Wildcats are 3-0 after beating AAAA's unranked Stephens County, 44-7. Gunner Stockton had another big game, according to AccessWDUN.
  • The No. 6 Washington County Golden Hawks' game at AAAAAA's unranked Greenbrier was postponed due to weather and won't be played until Saturday morning. The Golden Hawks are 2-0.
  • The No. 8 Swainsboro Tigers shut out AAAA's unranked Cross Creek, 48-0, to improve to 2-1.
  • The No. 9 Fitzgerald Purple Hurricane edged AAAA's unranked Upson-Lee, 21-18. They are 3-1.
  • The Dodge County Indians were obliterated, 41-7, by AAA's No. 9 Appling County. The Indians are 1-2.
  • On bye: No. 2 Hapeville Charter; No. 4 Dublin
