Basketball rankings: All 12 No. 1 teams win their region titles

All 12 of Georgia’s No. 1-ranked high school basketball teams won region titles last week, and each of 120 ranked teams advanced to the state playoffs.

That doesn’t mean all got through unscathed.

Six boys teams were dismissed from the Top 10 after losing their semifinal and consolation games. That made them No. 4 seeds in the state tournament, which begins Tuesday.

Those now-unranked but dangerous fourth seeds in the state-tournament draw are Gainesville, Carver-Columbus and Stockbridge in AAAAA, Columbia in AAAA and Johnson-Savannah and Butler in AAA.

They were replaced in the rankings – the last ones until after the state championship games – by Drew, Cedar Shoals and South Paulding (AAAAA), Mount Zion (AAAA) and Johnson-Savannah and Harlem (AAA).

Also new to the boys rankings are McEachern for Alpharetta in AAAAAA and Swainsboro and Manchester for Thomasville and Harlem in AA.

There are eight newly ranked girls teams. Griffin, Carrollton and Gilmer replaced Redan, Bainbridge and Northwest Whitfield in AAAA; Morgan County and Calhoun replaced Westminster and Washington County in AAA; Vidalia and Armuchee replaced Union County and Thomasville in AA; and Mitchell County replaced Calvary Day in A.

The first round of the state playoffs will be Tuesday and Wednesday on the home courts of the higher-seeded teams. The rounds of 16 will be Friday and Saturday. The state championship games are March 6-8 in Macon.
