Saturday’s Georgia Tech-Georgia Southern game is approaching sellout. Limited tickets were available Friday for the first meeting between the Yellow Jackets and Eagles.
Ticket sales this week have been brisk. As late as Wednesday, expected attendance was 50,000 for the game at 55,000-seat Bobby Dodd Stadium. The strong start by both teams – Tech is 2-0 and Georgia Southern is 1-1 with a narrow loss to N.C. State – as well as the historic nature of the game are undoubtedly attractions. Besides the game being the first between the two schools, Tech coach Paul Johnson coached at Georgia Southern for nine years, five as head coach, leading the Eagles to four Division I-AA national championships. There are 12,200 Georgia Southern alumni living in Cobb, DeKalb, Fulton and Gwinnett counties. Georgia Southern purchased 4,000 tickets from the Tech ticket office, far above the contracted allotment of 2,500.
Tech’s last non-Georgia home game to draw more than 52,312 was the Clemson game in 2011 (55,646).
Fans who are picking up tickets are will call are strongly encouraged to arrive early, as a large number of tickets are being held there. The ticket office opens at 8:30 a.m. Tickets can also be picked up Friday. The office is open until 5 p.m.
