Singer Demi Lovato quit Twitter after being assailed for a public chuckle at memes circulating about 21 Savage.

U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement arrested the rapper, whose given name is Sha Yaa Bin Abraham-Joseph, saying he is actually from the United Kingdom and overstayed his visa.

Memes like these, cracking wise at the idea of 21 Savage being British, started circulating on Twitter:

Lovato weighed in with a public chuckle early in the low-scoring Super Bowl.

“So far 21 Savage memes have been my favorite part of the Super Bowl,” she tweeted.

That sparked an immediate wave of criticism, led by Wale

“Why is someone’s freedom funny,” he posted in response. “I don’t get the joke.”

Others began making fun of Lovato’s past drug use. She is a recovering addict who has been forthcoming about her past with substance abuse.

Before long, she’d had it.

“(Bleep) Twitter. This is why I don't tweet anymore,” she said on the way out.

Naturally this generated yet more memes.
