If when you hear "ramen," you cringe while thinking of that crunchy, plastic-wrapped packet of noodles that likely served as half your diet in college, then you've been missing out. The Japanese dish was popularized in America as an quick dinner option in the 1970s, but the gourmet ramen you'll find prepared in restaurants is a totally different, veggie-and-meat-filled beast. On the heels of the announcement that Tokyo restaurant Tsuta has become the the first ramen eatery to earn a Michelin star , we bring you several spots to enjoy the hearty meal yourself, just in time for the winter cool-down.

Umaido

This Suwanee spot is a ramen lover's paradise, featuring eight varieties of the dish including honey miso, wasabi shoyu and ultra spicy and an extensive list of Japanese appetizers and sides. It's also one of the only restaurants in metro Atlanta to find vegetarian ramen, courtesy of the soymilk broth. It even got a shout-out from Staplehouse chef Ryan Smith when we polled Atlanta chefs on where they like to eat .

BoccaLupo

Chef Bruce Logue only offers one kind of ramen at his Edgewood pasta restaurant, but it's a goodie, served with collard/pork brodo, a momofuku egg and hot peanuts. It's a dish that helped the restaurant get a spot on our 10 favorite restaurants of 2014 .
