A large coalition of restaurants, ranging from individual local businesses to national chains, is banding together for the Great American Takeout, a social media movement encouraging consumers to order takeout on Tuesday, March 24.
Using the hashtag #greatamericantakeout, the growing list of restaurants, including local chain Marlow’s Tavern, is asking people to place an order of any size from any restaurant in a show of solidarity for the restaurant industry.

Thanks to bans on in-person dining by local governments around the country, including the City of Atlanta and many other metro-area municipalities, most restaurants are not able to do business as usual. Many have switched to takeout-only ordering, but restaurants in general have still seen a steep drop in revenue. At this point, government intervention specifically designed to help restaurants is an uncertain possibility.
The Great American Takeout is an effort to stimulate takeout ordering, with the restaurant coalition encouraging everyone on social media to ask their communities to participate. In a press statement, the restaurant coalition asked the following of participants:
- Post on social media in advance of the event, encouraging friends and followers to participate with the hashtag #GreatAmericanTakeout.
- Engage friends, family and colleagues to support local restaurants by ordering takeout meals.
- Order delivery or pick-up for at least one meal on Tuesday, March 24, then share photos on social media using the hashtag #GreatAmericanTakeout.
