Have you tasted soul food with a Filipino twist? That's what Janet's Kitchen plans to serve up when it opens July 23 in Decatur.

The cuisines of the Philippines and the American South will meet up at this new eatery, located at 1359 Clairmont Road. It will dish out lunch and dinner in its 40-seat space.

Janet's Kitchen is a venture by Decatur native Nycole Sanders. The concept is inspired by her mother and the restaurant's namesake, Janet Armstead, who operated a catering company in Atlanta for 40 years. The restaurant will feature Armstead's recipes for numerous Southern dishes and desserts as well as Filipino specialties by Nycole Sanders' husband, Lester Francisco, a native of Manila.

The restaurant will offer numerous dishes inflected with personality from the South and the Philippine archipelago. Among menu items, diners can expect chicken and pork adobo, collard greens, black-eyed peas, fried okra and even a cornbread-style bibingka, a rice and coconut milk dish commonly served in the Philippines as a dessert.

While Sanders knows her way around Atlanta, she can also navigate a kitchen. Besides being the daughter of a mother with a catering business, Sanders continues to operate The Brookie Cookie bakery in Brooklyn, New York. The sweets shop, open since 2010, was also inspired by her mother's sweet treats.
