The Extra Spicy Dragon Toes at Six Feet Under may sound intimidating, but they're surprisingly well-balanced.

Chiles rellenos. Armadillo eggs. Jalapeno poppers. Stuffed hot peppers are served in many variations, and with a litany of different names. But, seafood-centric Atlanta gastropub Six Feet Under may have coined one of the most original names yet: Extra Spicy Dragon Toes.

If the dish’s name sounds intimidating, the description will do little to quell your fears: a whole habanero pepper stuffed with a scallop and wrapped in bacon. Habaneros generally are rated 100 times hotter than jalapenos.

However, spicy food lovers who tangle with this beast might be pleasantly surprised to discover they’ve ordered a nicely balanced dish. The habanero itself is a relatively small pepper with thin flesh. At Six Feet Under, the deseeded peppers are overstuffed generously with plump, sweet scallops. The whole shebang is wrapped in bacon and cooked on a skewer.

The end result certainly is spicy, but not likely to overwhelm those who enjoy spicy food. The fattiness of the bacon and juicy scallops tempers the heat, resulting in an addictive bar snack.

Of course, some people aren’t interested in such a spicy dish, but there is safe harbor higher on the menu. Six Feet Under also serves jalapeno-based Spicy Rat Toes, and even milder Sweet Mouse Toes.
