Culinary top gun Kevin Gillespie returned to the kitchen over the weekend for the first time since his surgery earlier this year following his cancer diagnosis.

He teamed up with friend and fellow "Top Chef" alum Bryan Voltaggio Sunday for the latest installment of the Hired Guns series at Gillespie's Glenwood Park restaurant Gunshow.

Gillespie posted about the dinner on his Instagram account:

Voltaggio, who owns Volt restaurant in Maryland, also posted about the reunion:

Voltaggio and Gillespie were both runners-up on “Top Chef’s” sixth season in Las Vegas in 2009, losing out to Voltaggio’s brother, Michael. Gillespie was voted “Fan Favorite.” Voltaggio went on to compete on “Top Chef Masters,” while Gillespie later competed on “Top Chef Duels.”

Gillespie -- who, in addition to Gunshow also owns and operates Revival in Decatur and Gamechanger in Mercedes-Benz Stadium -- underwent surgery to remove a kidney in June after being diagnosed with renal cancer.
