Kevin Gillespie's newest restaurant, Revival, has been open for less than a year , but Gillespie is already expanding.

Communion, a German beer garden-inspired backyard, will open at Revival at 4 p.m. this Friday, and will feature backyard game classics incuding horseshoes and cornhole.

A food truck offers executive chef Andreas Müller's takes on German beer garden snacks , including grilled rye with Kartoffelkäse, Bavarian-style pretzels with hot mustard and Obatzda and grilled sausages with sauerkraut, mustard and beef fat-fried potatoes. The drink list offers a selection of European-style draft and bottled session beers, Old World-style wines, punches and batched cocktails.

The best part, though, might be not having to keep track of your tab -- once guests arrive, they purchase $5 tokens from the Communion cashier to buy food and drinks, with gratuity already factored into the prices. Any unused tokens can be used on future visits.

Revival, Gillespie's ode to the Southern food of his youth, has gotten favorable reviews since it opened last July . Gillespie, who was recently named a 2016 James Beard Award semi-finalist for Best Chef: Southeast , also owns the popular Gunshow in Glenwood Park.
