Want to do something good for Earth Day beyond attending an event , maybe something more long term? Try composting, in which leaves and food waste decompose, leaving a material with several uses, including as a fertilizer and natural pesticide. Not sure where to start? Read up on these three options here, and check out AJC food editor Ligaya Figueras' adventures in composting in Atlanta.

Compost Wheels

The Atlanta business specializes in residential and commercial collection of food waste. Here's how it works: For $20, They give you a bucket which you fill with your food scraps and organic waste. The company picks up the bucket, delivers it to a local farm to be composted then returns the nutrient-rich compost to you, or to local farms and gardens. The price for weekly pick-up is $29.95 per month for 12 months and $34.95 per month for six months. Bi-weekly pickup is $24.95 per month for 12 months. Click here for more information.

Join a community garden

Then save your scraps and give those to the garden's community compost bin. There are more than 300 community gardens in metro Atlanta; click here to find out more.

Make a worm box

All you need is a large Rubbermaid container and a drill. The worms -- which love shredded newspaper for bedding -- will eat your food and paper scraps. Find out how to make one here.

Still feel like too much of a compost novice to try it yourself? Get in on a local composting workshop at Food Well Alliance or Terra Nova Composting.
