Three locations of the popular Gladys Knight's Chicken and Waffles concepts closed abruptly this afternoon after a reported raid by the Georgia Department of Revenue .
The restaurant concept has locations at 529 Peachtree St. NE and 3752 Cascade Road in Atlanta and 7301 Stonecrest Concourse in Lithonia.
“We are closed for today,” said an employee who answered the phone at the Cascade Road location and identified herself as a manager.
The original Gladys Knight eatery opened in 1997 at 618 Ponce de Leon Ave., in Midtown. The opening was attended by then- Mayor Bill Campbell, news anchors Monica Kaufman and Karyn Greer and R&B stars Aliyah and Ginuwine. It moved to the Peachtree address in 1999.
"I've always wanted to get into the restaurant business, and now I'm able to do it vicariously through my kids, " Knight told the AJC at the time.
The Peachtree Street location was in the news recently after failing a health inspection . Knight visited the restaurant earlier this month and said customers should have no qualms about indulging in the restaurant's delectable menu of Southern favorites.
The restaurant was featured on a 2009 episode of "Man vs. Food," hosted by Emory grad Adam Richman.
