The team behind one of Atlanta's most popular beer shops is gearing up to open a restaurant in the West End.
Boxcar is slated to open March 1 in the Lee + White development at 1020 White St. SW, with executive chef Matt Hutchins helming the kitchen.
Hutchins’ farm-to-table menu will feature items including the “Lobstah Roll,” yuzu fried chicken, roasted beet carpaccio, soft Baked Pretzel and the Boxcar Beef Burger.
Hailing from Florida, Hutchins attended the Culinary Institute of America and was on the opening team at Hop City’s first restaurant. Barleygarden Kitchen & Craft Bar in the Avalon development in Alpharetta.
Boxcar will also feature a selection of 80 rotating draft beers, wines and cocktails at two in-house bars, with “beer nerds” on hand to guide diners through the drink options, according to a press release.
Inspired by the "industrial aesthetic of a grafitti'd railroad freight train," according to a press release, Boxcar's decor will feature a mural from popular Atlanta artist Catlanta depicting hobo icon Leon Ray Livingston. Hop City will also be donating a portion of sales at Boxcar to the Atlanta Mission and will be partnering with WorkSource Georgia to help keep longtime West End residents in the community and working.
Along with the new restaurant space, Boxcar will include Hop City’s traditional retail space where customers can choose from a selection of craft beers and small-production wines.
Hop City owner Kraig Torres said the retail side will be “more curated” with closer to 1,000 choices compared to the 1,900 or the original West Midtown. The store will also offer a selection of small-production wines.
In addition to Boxcar and the Avalon Barleygarden, Torres is set to open a second Barleygarden location in the Pinewood Forest development along with a Hop City later this year.
Boxcar will be open from 11 a.m.-10 p.m. Sunday, 5-10 p.m. Wednesday-Thursday and 11 a.m.-midnight Friday -Saturday. Hop City’s retail area will be open 11 a.m.-10 p.m. Monday-Thursday, 11 a.m.-midnight Friday-Saturday and noon-10 p.m. Sunday from 12:00 pm to 10 pm.
Boxcar will join several other concepts at Lee + White including Cultured South, Monday Night Garage, and Wild Heaven Brewery.
