Cowtippers Steaks & Spirits, a popular restaurant in Ansley Park owned by Metrotainment Cafes, is slated to close at the end of the month.
Metrotainment Cafes still owns the property at 1600 Piedmont Road that Cowtippers calls home, and is “weighing several options including selling the restaurant and property,” CEO Jeff Landau said in a statement. In the meantime, the space will be used for private events handled by Metrotainment’s catering company, Epic Events.
“The restaurant has been a part of our restaurant group for a very long time," said Landau in a statement. "But with the changing climate of the city, we are going to close the restaurant and turn our attention to our other successful concepts including Hudson Grille, Einstein’s, Joe’s on Juniper, Hudson FC and Guaco Joe’s,” he said.
In July 1993, a dining critic for The Atlanta Journal-Constitution reviewed the newly launched Midtown steakhouse, calling the place “a hoot.”
“Bent, hip and ready for fun, you can dress fancy or plain, from Bermuda shorts and polo shirt to a rhinestoned approximation of Dale Evans's Las Vegas drag. You'll fit. Somebody at Cowtippers already has done it - and cracked a joke about it,” Elliott Mackle wrote.
The gay-friendly restaurant quickly became known for its welcoming patio, country-themed events and outgoing staff.
“We are thankful for the many years of patronage from Atlanta and looking forward to continued success with our other concepts as we continue to grow in this city,” Landau said.
The restaurant’s last day in business will be Jan. 28.
