When it's blazing hot outside, dairy is typically the last thing one wants to eat. Who craves a huge hunk of cheese when it's 95 degrees in the shade? Yet, thanks to some mystical Italian alchemy, we rush to eat massive portions of full-fat gelato at places like Amorino in the Shops at Buckhead.

Any ice cream is good in Atlanta during the summer, simply because it’s served cold, but Amorino’s gelato stands out for its depth of flavor. There are summer specialties, like the organic blackcurrant sorbet, which is tart and refreshing in addition to being a beautiful color of purple that looks almost black.

Then, there’s L’Inimitabile, a rich gelato that expertly mimics the hazelnut and chocolate flavors of Nutella.

Getting yourself a cone of L’Inimitabile does have its challenges. First, it’s basically impossible for an American to pronounce. I must have said it to myself in line 10 different ways before chickening out and asking for, “uh, the Nutella flavor?” Second, it’s not cheap — a small cone at Amorino is $5.75, but the staff does skillfully sculpt your gelato into a flower shape.

But, personally, I’d jump through quite a few hoops to get another cone of L’Inimitabile gelato before the summer is over. The rich, decadent chocolate flavor is intense, but not overpowering, and it plays well with several of the other flavors at Amorino. It may not make sense to eat all that dairy in the middle of the summer, but who can think when it’s this hot anyway?
