FLOWERY BRANCH – Here are five quick facts you need to know about Rex Grossman, 35, who was signed to compete for the Falcons backup quarterback job on Wednesday.
For Georgia fans, this is probably a refresher course:
- Grossman finished second in the Heisman Trophy balloting in 2001. He was only the fifth sophomore to ever finish in the top two of that prestigious balloting.
- For the Gators, he appeared in 35 games with 31 starts for 1,765 plays and also started the 2001 Sugar Bowl, while playing in the 2002 Orange Bowl.
- He was 3-0 vs. Georgia with 898 yards passing and five touchdowns in wins in 2000 (34-23), 2001 (24-10) and 2002 (20-13).
- Declared for the NFL Draft after his junior season. Drafted in the first round by the Chicago Bears with the 22nd overall choice in the 2003 NFL Draft.
- His record as a starter is 25-22 and the only season he started 16 games, he helped to lead Lovie Smith and the Chicago Bears to Super Bowl XLI.
