A new Renaissance hotel will soon open near Hartsfield-Jackson International Airport, adding a modern option for travelers staying in the airport area.

The Renaissance Atlanta Airport Gateway, under construction since October 2015 and set to open in early May, will join a Marriott and SpringHill Suites in the Gateway development next to the Georgia International Convention Center. It will be reachable by using the free airport SkyTrain people-mover, and will have a restaurant called Hickory & Hazel Southern Table & Bar.

The new 204-room hotel, developed by AVR Realty Company LLC and Grove Street Partners, will be the second Renaissance in the Atlanta airport area. It will sit about three miles away from the iconic Renaissance Concourse Atlanta Airport Hotel, with its stair step-like design visible from the airfield.

The Renaissance Concourse is on the north side of the airport, while the Renaissance Atlanta Airport Gateway will open on the west side of the airport.

The SkyTrain connection is an advantage compared to hotels in other parts of the airport area, according to general manager Donelle Zunker, who also manages the Marriott Gateway hotel.

Most Atlantans never have a need to take the SkyTrain, which goes to the Georgia International Convention Center and Gateway hotels, as well as to the airport rental car center. But it's a convenient form of transit for those who don't want to depend on hotel shuttles, rental cars or other transportation to get from the airport to their hotel or the convention center and back.

Zunker said she hopes the new Renaissance will also be a "cool new option" for travelers looking to stay at a trendy hotel, who may not have thought of the airport area as an option for such a choice.
