A few high clouds in the sky Wednesday will be the only things between North Georgia and another day of near total sunshine.

The clouds will be the result of a passing weather system that will otherwise have no effect on weather locally, Channel 2 Action News meteorologist Brian Monahan said. After a cold start in the 30s, Atlanta is headed for a high of 54 degrees, which is right on target for this time of year.

“Clear sailing, quiet weather through the rest of the work week for the most part,” Monahan said. “Just a very slight chance of a rain shower tomorrow, but I think most of us are going to stay nice and dry as we go through your Thursday.”

Thursday’s rain chances are low at 10%, and there is no chance of rain Friday, according to Channel 2. On Saturday, conditions should be cold but clear for those headed to Athens to celebrate University of Georgia’s national championship win with the rest of Dawg Nation.

There are preliminary plans for a grand celebration Saturday with a parade at noon to travel down Lumpkin Street. The parade will end at Sanford Stadium for a celebration beginning at 2 p.m. Exact details will be announced later.

Temperatures in the low 50s are predicted for Saturday's University of Georgia championship parade in Athens.

Temperatures should be in the 50s in the Classic City around noon, Monahan said. He expects a mix of clouds and sun, but an approaching wet weather system will hold off until well after sunset. With cold air arriving overnight Saturday, there is also the potential for snow and ice.

“We are talking about a winter weather threat, but that should be well after the celebration in Athens,” Monahan said. “It should be just fine for the parade.”

Monahan said he is watching closely the timing of cold air from the north and a system of rain he is tracking to the south. Periods of rain are likely late Saturday night into Sunday morning, which could turn to snow and wintry mix for many parts of North Georgia, he said.

“There is the potential for accumulating snow and ice this weekend,” Monahan said. “Way too early to talk about amounts, exact timeline, exactly where that rain-snow line is going to set up.”

Temperatures are predicted to drop into the 20s on Sunday morning and won’t leave the 30s on Sunday afternoon, according to the latest forecast. Precipitation is 90% likely to end the weekend, but Monahan said it will be several days before forecasts can accurately predict whether it will be wet or frozen.

“I know we say winter weather and there are a lot of questions,” he said. “How much here, how much there. It’s far too early for that. I just want you to be aware that possibility is there for at least parts of our area for Saturday and Sunday.”

The projected high Wednesday is 54 degrees.
